SAFARI
INFORMATION & HIGHLIGHTS
The trip is not arduous and there are plenty of stops along the
way for looking, learning and photo opportunities. Some of the points
of interest are an amazing stone quarry where it seems time has
stood still for centuries. Also you will pass by old temples and
through small forgotten villages with their family shrines and the
hustle and bustle of rural life. Always the mountains in the distance
are getting ever closer. There is an interesting stop at small farm
to see what crops are in season (vanilla, coffee, cocoa, cloves)
and the local farm animals. There coffee, tea and cakes from the
baskets carried on the roof of the car are served.
Other interesting spots are the hot spring in the rice fields where
local people bathe and have so for a long time. Marvel at the endless
beauty of the manicured rice terrace green or golden brown - depending
on harvest season and learn about the amazing irrigation system
and the rivers that flow down the sea. The vehicle climbs to over
900 meters and you are above the rice bowl of Jatiluwih and the
plains of Bali.

The
mountain air is cooler and you are in an area so different
- far removed from the Bali most visitors stay. There are
tracks and paths and cool mountain water, wild orchids and
birds and an overall stillness. Then the forest turns into
a bamboo jungle and ferns abound - the people change and it's
here you find the Wakalouka Camp. Built from local bamboo
in the middle of nowhere serving delicious Balinese mountain
food - not quite "haute cuisine" but almost.
